View Full Version : I suck at poker

The problem is patience. I imagine that's what makes most people bad players. I was playing tonight at Champps, and it was going as I expected. I folded all but 2 hands in the first half hour. I was drinking some long island iced teas and getting impatient. I got 7s8s and decided to call when the guy next to me went all in after the flop. There was 9s Q J on the board. I figure I'm on a straight and flush draw and I haven't gotten any cards all night. We show, he has AK. So the 10 wouldn't help me. I knew before I saw his cards that he had me beat. I think the combination of alcohol + impatience is a guaranteed way to lose.

I think I need to spend more time learning the odds of completing straights and flushes..

alcohol + GAMBLING is a guaranteed way to lose

The problem is patience

It almost always is. Some people hate to just sit at the table and not play and chase what is at best, a marginal hand. Knowing you have that leak makes it very easy for you to fix it.
Personally I prefer to watch TV while I play. Makes the long stretches of non playable cards go by faster.

I played on and off this weekend and ended up about 170 BBs (I play limit) with about 5-6 hrs total play.

If anyone is interested I can do for here what I did for another site.
I made a nifty neat cool desktop for windows that has the top tier starting hands, odds of drawing 4 to a flush, open ended straight odds, gutshot drawing odds etc. It fits in a narrow edge of the screen next to the table so you have it always available when you play. It only fits 'correctly' if you use 1024x768 screen resolution. 800x600 the tables cover it and at 1200+ well, I can't see it that small even with a 19" monitor :)

Just an FYI:

DRAWING ODDS

4 to a flush: 1 in 4.5
Open ended straight: 1 in 5
Open 1 end: 1 in 11
Fill a Gutshot: 1 in 11
Open Straight Flush: 1 in 23
Open 1 end: 1 in 46

So as you can see, you need to be getting some SERIOUS pot odds to chase a hand to the river with these.

I usually don't play too bad liquored up but there is always that point where you quit trying to play poker and start trying to get the waitress to bring you shots faster. I get a little loose but sometimes that’s not so bad. :D

I knew I shouldn't have been drinking...only diet cokes from now on

The waitress was being very friendly, though...too bad i have a gf :x

Does your GF play poker with you?

She wasn't at the tournament, but she does like to play against me. She always wins, though.

When she turns 21 in june, I'll let her loose at some of these tournaments and let her win prizes for me.

I've got to gain an edge over her somehow. If she finds this, then I'm back to square one.

lol Right on, I don't think I could sit at the same table as my GF, If I took a big pot off her or put her out, I would be on the couch!!

I always play better after a shot of tequila. Don't know why, but I do.

Bryan there is only one way to get ried of your bad habits. Just one way. play more and more. Its just something you have to get over. Dont let your self down. Try to keep high hope an keep on digging away.

Worst thing I ever did was take a break. The wifey was getting mad at me so to prove to her that poker is a hobby and not a habit (Maybe) I didn't play for a week and a half. I know it wasn't long, but when I came back I was way to anxious and played hands that I really shouldn't have.

The best thing to do is play...and let the wifey spend the money that is won.... :D

I am in big trouble with my band right now for being late a few times to practice and for missing practice altogether last night. Man, I totally lost track of time. There was a great baseball game on, had a few cold ones, a big pile of chips, next thing I know, I'm at the final table and band practice has been over for 15 minutes. I know I am gonna get a whole big ration of **** from them tonight. I guess I deserve it though. I should probably take the rest of the week off from poker and show up early every night to practice until our show at Whiskey Bill's on Saturday. Arrggh. OK, enough outta me, just wanted to make the cooralation between wives and bandmates. Strangely similar, eh?

I too get very impatient, especially in DPT games. SInce you only get 500 chips and you have to ante every hand you want to get in as much as you can. I see myself forcing hands that I would not force in a regular small blind big blind game.

Please dont not use anything you do in any DPT or free tournament. In a real money game. You should have 2 types of games one for money and one for fun. Thats one reason i dont play online or in many free tournaments. I dont want to pick up any bad habits.

I hope that means since I keep losing at these free tournaments I'll do well in real money games

But somehow I doubt that

u never know. just play. only way to find out weather or not you got it. Poker i belive take no skills that someone is born with. maybe the ability to calcuate odds an such in your head. but for the most part it is jsut playing lots of hands an learning as one gose along.

I dont care if it is money or for fun, with the hands I had tonight I am a loser either way! When you finally have to go all-in with 5-9 suited you know that you had a bad night. What was sad was I almost hit a king high straight or a king high flush, but didnt get either

Hi Rick,

As you can see, I am very interested in anything "NiftyNeat" ...
therefore, I am very interested in your Hands-n-Odds desktop, if you could send or post a copy. Let me know if there is anything you need that I can post or send in return.

Thanks!

Sure no problem.

Just click this:

And if you use IE, right click and 'set as background' or Firefox, 'set as wallpaper' and you are set. I am sure other browsers are similar.
