I am at a loss for words to describe the disaster that was last night....
It was a $40 buy-in tourney with about 25 people downtown on the top floor of a 32 story building, really nice view really crappy tourney....
First of all there was a rebuy which I hate, but it was supposed to be that you could only rebuy to the amount of chips equal to the shortest stack on your table  OK sounds like a bad investment maybe nobody will do it....nope one guy bought in like 3 times in the first 20 minutes...they said that it would only be for the first hour, okay fine, but alas people were still buying in 2 and half hours into the game, when we were at the 4th blind level???? They guy hosting disappeared, and the chips were left for good faith I guess cause I saw at least one person do a free "rebuy"
Now some of these guys were cops, so I am not about start anything and get a Mike/Worm type beatdown....(they were actually nice guys, but know less than nothing about running a poker game)
When it was all said and done I went out 6th....but just really really want to leave.....the blinds were at 1000/2000 with 500 ante and there were roughly 350,000 in chips on the table...this game may still be going for all I know.....that was the highest the blinds would go according to their "rules"
I really wish I would have drank some of the free beer so that maybe I would have no memory of this nightmare...

Sounds scarey as hell, I would have to have a talk with who ever told you about that game or invited you.

Hey IDH, that game sounded pretty bad. You should have dipped into the "free" rebuy stack about 4 times. Thebn you could have said that it was a fair game. I HATE REBUYS!!!!!!!

I know, it's not me to disrespect the game though even if others are....yes the rebuy thing sucked, but would have been okay if it were regulated.....it was the total lack of any organization whatsoever that was the downfall.....
Oh one thing I forgot too....when we got down to 5 handed, the middle table was down to 5 as well but nobody would move from the big table of 8 and the middle table didn't want to consolidate??? "Nobody wants to move from this table" :conf: You don't want to??? You have no choice!
I don't care about the $40, but I want those 4 hours of my life back...
Speaking of bad tourneys....
I played in a tourney on Warren AFB at the NCO club last year. The TDs had no idea what to do. The buy-in was $50, but no one could tell me what the prize distribution was. After the tourney started, I was finally able to find out that it was illegal for them to have an actual gambling event, so the prizes were gift certificates to the local mall. First was $500, 2nd $250, 3rd $100, and 4th $50. This wouldn't have been so bad but there were 200 entrants! They took in over $10K and paid out $900.
They went out and bought cases of those thin red, white, and blue plastic chips you get at Walgreens and gave each player a box as they signed up. I don't remember the details, but the denominations of the chips added up to about 4000 for each player. And the blinds started at 1-2!
Now, I'm a fan of deep stack NL Holdem, but this was ridiculous. After an hour went by, the blinds were raised to 2-3. After another hour, to 3-4. Since they didn't have any higher denomination chips, the survivors started amassing these huge piles of plastic chips. Later on, one guy had so many that they wouldn't stay in stacks and kept falling over. So he just left them in this giant mixed up pile in front of him that took up 1/4 of the table. He couldn't reach his cards from behind his stack, so he had to sit to the side.
The TDs finally realized they hadn't thought this out very far, and started raising the blinds faster. After 5 hours they went from 5-6 to 1000-2000. Since the white chips were now superfluous, they went around with garbage bags and collected them all. They didn't chip them up or anything, they just came around and grabbed your whites and threw them in the bag.
I heard the tourney finally concluded at 8:00 the next morning.

Yeah from now on I will always be a little skeptical of any new tourney I play in for the first time, unless of course it was praised on denverpoker!
SCAM!! ...

While it was certainly possible, it was explained to me that it was considered a charity event to raise funds for the NCO club itself. The TD's were NCO club staff that everyone seemed to know.
I got the impression that they got 4 times the number of entrants they expected and were basing the prizes on 50 entrants. It just didn't occur to them to up the prizes with the number of entrants.
I still feel like gross incompetence is the best explanation.
