View Full Version : What do you expect at a home game??

I'm considering hosting a home game with a few of my buddies, but there would not be enough of us to make it really fun (only 4 right now), so I would need to open it to this forum. My question would what do people expect at a home game? I can tell you what I have to offer and maybe I could get some advice on whether or not this would be acceptable.
I've got $2350 in 11.5 gram clay chips (really good deals on wedoitallvegas.com), cards of course, and I will have a table big enough to accomodate at least 8 players. I think I'm OK on this portion. But my house is not big enough, no fancy poker room so we would be relegated to the garage. I have good lighting, propane heat (small, portable but it keeps it comfortable) and would consider buying carpet remnants to throw down on poker night. Area would be Northeast Denver (Thornton).
I wouldn't be looking at tournaments, just a friendly limit game with a min and max buy in. Possibly a no limit game depending on what you guys think.
I'm new to the forum so bear with me as I sort thru this process.
BTW, I really enjoy reading thru the comments and thoughts of the forum, nice to know there is a whole group out there dedicated to the greatest game of all. :P

Neilsco: you really don't need much. probably a few more chips to make people feel like they were not pot commited in the first round. I like to start out with 1200 to 1500 in chips per person if you have a tourney. I would say 8 people wound be good. More if you can work it.
I don't think the size of your house, or where the game is played is too much of an issue to those who are the hard cores. Clearly, as long as people are comfortable, you will be alright. There are a few folks in the forum from Thornton, including me, so I think you will get some near by interest.
Tournaments are nice, especially if you follow it up with a game of 2-5 or 3-6.
Snack and drinks (even if it is byob) is a good idea. Steak dinner would be better...lol
I hope this helps a little. AND MOST OF ALL, WELCOME TO THE FORUM!!!!

Thinking about it a little more.....dancing girls, the Coors twins, Jessica Simpson in a swim suit...that would also help  :!:
And don't forget the prime rib buffet. That is a must. :o

Hey! Nobody mentioned the first rule...The first DP event at a hosts house comes with a Money Back Guarantee!
I live in Thornton also, so let me know when you plan your first game.
I would also agree a tournament first followed by either limit or no-limit game works well.

Thanks for the advice, with starting out at a 1000 I think I'll just change the dollar chips to $100 for the tournament and that would give 10 players $1275 to start.
OK next question :?: ....what format do you guys like? Payouts? Percentage? Places? Obviously I think the tourney would be No Limit.
Second, do you think it would be better to start off with a cash game for a predetermined number of hours and then start the tourney at a certain time? This would allow the players who get knocked out to leave if they wish and not have to hang around for a couple of hours waiting for enough players to hit the rail to start the cash game. That's my thought process anyway.
Hmm lest's see:
1) Prime rib dinners for 10 = $250
2) Drinks for 10 = $200
3) Dancing girls/waitresses = $1000
4) An evening spent playing poker with 9 of your closest strangers  Not that priceless
Actually I think you are better off starting with the tourney. As people get knocked out they can start their own cash game to kill time if need be. Tourneys don't last all that long if you have the blinds set up right. Maybe an hour or so.
Tourney payouts should be top 2 or 3 max. You have to make it worthwhile to play. Lower buyins top 2, higher pay top 3. Even higher multi table tourneys can pay more.
3) Dancing girls/waitresses = $1000
Be careful with this one. I am sure a lot here would don a skirt and wait the tables for this much cash. ;)

Sounds great Nielsco. 1275 is a good amount to start with. As for cash games, I agree with Rick. People will start one on the side (if you give them the ok) while they are waiting for the tourney to conclude. As people drop out of the tourney, they can just jump into the cash game.
As for the $1000.00 for dancing girls/waitresses, I can see it now. Dog Boy and WoSP dancing around in thongs (worn backwords of course) Oh, just the thought.....I'm not coming!!!!!

Dude, if you were around I'd HAVE to wear the thong backwards to keep the chute free from foreign objects.
I agree with Rick. The "looser's lounge will play a cash game while the main table decides the winner.

 Doggie, you crack me up.
Love the idea of a 2-5 or 3-6 game on the side. Keeps everyone involved.

Man, I keep thinking about the game I played Saturday night. THey only had two chip denominations (25.00 and 50.00.) 100 total chips. That just does not make any sense to me.
Why not at least 25 and 100. Talk about a cluster ***k of chips on the table. At one point, it took 20 minutes just to play one hand. Most of the time was spent counting chips. When you walk in to a hoem tourney, and a rack of chips is placed in front of you at 25 and 50 denominations, you better be ready for a long night. It was fun, but way too much of a headache.
I am use to tourney with about 15-20 chips in front of me. 25s 100s and a 500. Much more manageable. :09:
