I just checked out the tourney schedule at The Gates and noticed they changed some of the new tourneys (YEA!!!), has anyone played any of these? I really like starting with more chips and as The Gilpin has the biggest starting chip stacks, their rake is absolutely ridiculous. I think The Gates pays out 90% of the buy in where The Gilpin pays out about 75%.
They have M, T, Th ($100) and Su ($60) 7pm games with 10k in chips (20 minute rounds) and Friday noon ($140) starting with 40k (30 minute rounds). Do all these tourneys start at 25/50 blinds? Has anyone played them? The Gates does have the nicest room up there and any feedback on these tourneys would be much appreciated!!!

Don't take this as gospel, but I was told night before last (by a GG floor/sometime dealer) that the tourneys start at 100/100 (then 100/200, and so forth), and antes kick in when the blinds are something like 500/1000.
I'd love to see these start at 25/50 or even 50/100, but they still seem to be decent value.

Yet another smoke screen move by the Gates. I played in this tournament last week and although the starting chips and rounds werent as bad as they were before, the tournament went forever............ Don't know about you all, but who wants to play for so long. I overheard other players saying the same thing. Not sure what the point is of $40,000 in chips? Cannot wait to see what happens when they take it all back. There isn't any way that they can be benefiting from this. I heard two dealers saying that this just kills them.

It gives the better players a chance to actually play as opposed to the crapshoot tourneys they usually hold up there. I am officially interested and might actually start going up the hill to paly tournies again because of this news.
bigger chip stacks +longer blind levels = A GOOD THING

Who wants to play 1500 chip 15 minute blind donkey shovefests. I can play SNGs online. Deep stack poker is a far truer test, and reduces both variance and the necessity of playing "shove or fold" in the middle levels of a tournament. Better play is rewarded more often in this structure.
I love these stacks, and I can't wait to actually be able to get up there in time for one of them.
For those who don't want to play a tourney that takes several hours, you've got plenty of options at the Gilpin and Central Station. No need to piss on the Gates actually taking the initiative at providing more value for the deep stack player's dollar. :p

Honestly I won't even play tournies up the hill as they give out tiny stacks, short blind levels, and obviously are not thinking of the player but that may have just changed. The Gates (Joey) have just made a great move away from the crapshoot tourneys that plauge blackhawk and hopefully this will start to reel in the good palyers and winning players that know a good structure and will have bankroll over a lifetime rather than the donkeys who think 20 minute blinds are anywhere near reasonable and play the game for a few years and fizzle out. Joey (and the gates) obviously learned A LOT from the HPT and it is showing. This is some of the best news I have seen in a long time for poker in Colorado. I do see little point in the "deep stacks" if the blinds are starting @ 100/200 but the 30 minute blind levels will make a HUGE difference, enough of one to get me to check out some of these tournies.
this is awesome news.
Also what does QFMFT mean?

Yes, I agree. What the Gates is doing with $40,000 in starting chips along with 30 minute rounds is outstanding - if you want to play for 10 hours. This amount of time is just too long for me. The only thing I question is how long can they do it, becuase there is no way that this benefits their dealers or the Gates. If Burger King had an offer of buy one Whopper get 9 free, how long would they last? Someone should have a tournament where you get a lot of chips, but it is over in like 2 or 3 hours - for players like me anyway.

You might be better suited for smaller sit n go tournies. These last less time. I think 40k to start is awesome!!! If I can play poker for 6+ hours for less than $200 I'm gonna do it. Thats a great value. The gates is really stpping it up here and its definitely a move in the right direction. This will definitely draw better players and lead to some great tourney play. Im definitely gonna go and check this out soon!

Went and played this tourney the day after Thanksgiving and was SO disappointed!
They decided to drop the rounds to 20 minutes and remove a middle blind round (website and flyers did not reflect this change). As blinds start at 100/100 and anti’s are introduced after the first round, this really isn’t a deep stack tourney anymore. Just a tourney where you can start with a lot of chips.
They seated 11 (yes, 11!) people per table, and we had 8 tables. We were down to 4 tables and blinds were 4,000/8,000/1,200 (I think that was the anti). Average stack was about 75k so with 40 people left; even the average stack was desperate. There wasn’t a lot of “poker” to be played at that point.
According to the calculations we could do with their payouts and total chips, they kept about 19% of the buy in for the house (I know the first $80 was $65/$15). I was hoping they could compete with the tourneys at The Gilpin, but I can’t say they can. I also can’t say I’d go back and try it again.

Thanks for clueing us in.
I was intending to go up there on Sunday to play the "$100 No re-buys/
15,000 chips/30 Minute Rounds" at noon.
Do you know whether all their tourneys are back to 20 minute rounds, an initial 100/100 blind, middle blind level removed, etc.?
If so, I can't see why I'd waste my time going on Sunday when it's just a turbo with twice the chips and twice the blinds. I couldn't find a link to any sort of tourney structures on their website, only the times, starting chips, and buyin amounts.

I'm not sure as their website still says 30 minute rounds for the Friday tourney too. I'd suggest calling and asking, but when we asked what happened they said they could change the structure at any time.

The changes that you report make it a totally different game. You are right...it is not a big stack poker game anymore.

Got bad news for you.....the Gilpin takes a 25% rake in their tournaments....and while I do prefer their structure to Gates, I can't say you are going to find much poker to be played past the break in many tournies up there...especially in the ones where there are 8 or more tables...I've been at final tables where the blinds were 16K/32K when we only started with 5000in chips...even with 500,000 chips in play you are forced all in everytime you are in the blinds...
probably why you always see chops up there....skill is gone by the time you reach 5 players....

Hmm...seems like a silly proposition for me to go up there on Sunday, then. I'd do much better going up to the Gilpin on a Thursday and doing their 2-fer with $10 bonus add-on, or something, if what I want is the most play for my money.
That seems a decent way to counter the Gilpin's rake on a single tourney, if you're basically getting more equity in both tourneys by getting the discount by buying into both.
Meh. What I'd give to have the Sahara's $42+18 add-ons with decent structure here.

ugh.. I guess I will stick to playing tourneys online on sundays. I actually am a cash game palyer online but have decided to start playing more tourneys and appearently it was a good decision as pocketfives has me ranked in the top 100 online tourney players in Colorado (81st) :D

<--------- is a total online donk...
I find it difficult to stay motivated to put forth my best effort at the stakes I play....and really I just have no feel for the game whatsoever.
do love that there is ALWAYS a game if you want to play though...

Actually, before they started messing with it, the Gilpin's $70 freeze-out had a better structure than the Sahara tourney (only slightly).

Oh, who am I kidding, I'm strictly a $3-$5 buy-in player anyway.
