I played in the Gilpin freeroll on Sunday. The prize pool was $1,100, with $500 for first. There were about 130 runners. The start time was 9 am, so I got there by 8:30 and had no problem getting a seat. I talked with the poker room manager and they are planning to have these freerolls quarterly. You need to sign up to receive their promo emails for future events.

I busted out in the second level when I pushed pre flop with KK vs. AA. I had some good hands early, with AK and 44, but the table was tighter than I thought. I should have folded the KK to the 800 reraise by a rock, but I beat her into the pot, instead. ighn.

I stuck around and played in a 2/5 game with one $2 blind. That was a mistake as I won no hands. Nada. Zilch. Nothing. AK < KT. KQ < couple of A rags. KJ < K7 that hit his magical 7 on the river, calling my $5 raise on the flop, turn and reraising the river. I left with $11 out of my original $100 buy in.

The Fortune Valley action was more plentiful, but I could not bring myself to play poker after the shellacking at the Gilpin. So I played some blackjack and with the help of the rest of the table telling me how to play, I won $20. That was the first time that I ever played bj. Even the dealer was showing me how to count cards and how to play.

Cliff Notes: Played a freeroll and then was robbed by donks. Played BJ and won. I will do it again in another 90 days.

Thanks for the report!

Funny thing about blackjack. I've played three times up there, all after I've lost money playing poker. All three times, I've made up for my losses.

I went and checked out a blackjack strategy book, so I am now prepared. The rules up there for blackjack are pretty player friendly, with dealers standing on all 17's and 3:2 bj payouts.

Yeah. The only bummer (and deal killer for almost any gambler) is the $5 min/max bet.

+1

and Brent, don't ever consider folding KK preflop in a freeroll regardless of the action. Could've just as easily been ppQ's or AKs, etc.

I should have had the fold in me. Here is the action:

I was in late position and there were four limpers with the blinds at 50/100 (2nd level). I raised to 300. Three folds and one reraise to 800. I immediately pushed. I should have stopped to get a read. If I did, I would have realized that the player who reraised me was solid and was someone who I have seen up there in the past. I would have mucked it if I thought it through. She was also giving some reliable strength indications as I was pushing my chips in the middle. Live and learn.

IMO the ONLY time that this is a good fold is if her aces are face up on the table. Even tight players will re-raise pf with a wider range of hands than just pocket aces.

Sorry for the hijack, I just can't believe that you think that you should've folded K's preflop here. If she felts pocket Q's you're pretty happy, probably just some results oriented thinking.

If I have an above average or average stack I am raising more than 300 here. The reason being that I want my kings heads up or three handed. The smallest raise I make here is to around 500 but more likley around 700 or even 800. raising 3 times the BB with four limpers here is asking to be drawn out in a big pot. If I have anywhere near a below average stack or short stack stack I push here. I am also checking the limpers stacks to see who might be looking for a place to put thier money in here.

I didn't read what she had but either way the hand was played wrong. sorry for the hijack but I read this and had to say something.
