I went up and played in the Gilpin's "Wacky Wednesday" promotion yesterday. By my reasoning, this is by far the best bargain for your money in Blackhawk/Central City.
You get entry into three tournaments with individual entry fees of $40 (noon), $50 (3:00), & $70 (7:00) for $100 total if you purchase entry into all of them at the same time before the first tourney. That's $160 of entrys for $100. That's a great deal. About 50 people bought in for the $100 deal yesterday.
The tourneys start with 4000, 5000, and 7000 in chips, respectively. 20 minute blind levels. Blinds start at 25/50, then go 50/100, 100/200, 200/400, 300/600, 500/1000, 600/1200, 800/1600, 1000/2000....etc. It's a nice structure. You'll get some play for your money. A lot of average players. A few good players. Good TAG play will get you to the money, but expect to see some beats.....The money does get very shallow at the end though.....
The only issue is that if you make the $40 tourney final table, it will not finish in time for you to be at the start of the 3:00 tourney. Brain, floor manager, told me they are going to change the noon tourney to a $30 buy-in w/3000 in chips, and that should get it over in time for the 3:00 start.

Hey Bruno,
I was up there for the 7pm tourney. Shame we didn't meet up. I was at Table 11, and got knocked out in Level 6 (on a foolish call).
One note about the Wacky Wednesday promo...
If you pay the $100, you're playing rake-free. That means for the 27 schmoes (like me--53 paid for the all-day "pass") that showed up for the 7pm tourney, your entry fee (and the house rake from it) is paying the all-day players' rakes! If you pay cash for each tourney instead of the $100, you're actually paying $30+10, $30+20, and $40+30!!! (Or some permuation like that).
Thus, I would avoid playing in any Wednesday tourney unless you can play all three tourneys.
Edited to add: I imagine the Sunday noon $70 tourney is more like a $60+10 deal.

I'm heading up to the Wacky Wednesday gig again today. Anybody else? If so, I'll be in black, with a black 'Bauer' baseball hat. Say hi.....

I was there. Orange and blue Florida Gator shirt. I think we talked for a minute.
In the noon tourney I just could not connect with anything I had A3,A4,A5,A8 at least a dozen times and missed every one. Went out with 5 tables left.
In the 3:00 I was out on the last hand before break.
In the 7:00 I got up to 12,000 early, then couldn't catch again. Lost 1800 wiht JJ. Had to fold on a AQx board. Lost 2400 with AsQs on a J high board and folded to a 5000 raise, the raiser showed the J. Made a good fold with AQ on the turn when the other player hit trip 5"s. Raised with AJ in middle position and folded when I got reraised with AK in the small blind. New table lost 5000 with JJ when the A9 player caught the A on the river. Finally all in with my last 2000 KJ lost to AQ when he hit the straight on the river. There was a ten on the flop, I hit the J on the turn, K on the river.
It was fun, I will try it again

Yes, I remember we had a short conversation. Hope to see you at the next one. I ended up 11th, 15th, and 17th. Very dissappointing (last tiem up had a 5th and a 8th). But three of us had 10% of each other and Eric ended up chopping the 3:00 so I made some money there.
I have a deep dislike of the $5 bet limit cash games up on the hill, but the games at the gilpin after the 7:00 tourney play a bit more to my liking (one one or two donkeys). I made my buy-in back there.....

Hey Bruno,
Thanks for the info, sounds like a good game. Do you know how long they're running this promo? I can't go this month, but maybe May 2nd if it's still going on....??

This promo has been running for at least 5-6 months. It brings up 40-50 people every Wednesday; therefore, fills at least 4-5 $2/5 tables when the tourneys are winding down. I can't imagine why they would discontinue it.

There were 90 players in the noon, 70 in the 3:00, and 90 in the 7:00.
They were all sold out early this week.
This was my first time. I don't know if they had sold out before.

I got there about 10:45 on Wednesday, and had no problem registering for the promotion. I think they were sold out for the noon tourney by 11:30. Get there by 11:00 if you want to play.
