View Full Version : Bad ruling by the host

OK, I'm a bit steamed, and I'd like to get this off my chest, and get some feedback.
Last night, I was playing in a CSL Tournament up north, and was doing very well. In fact, I was the chip leader going into the final table. Something came up and I had to leave. I suggested that they muck my hands and throw in my blinds, and whatever place I am in when my chips run out is where I finish. The host said I would have to forfeit my chips and take an 8th place finish. I was in total disagreement with this ruling, so he said that if the entire table agrees with it, that will be fine. So I asked the table if they agreed that if I walked away from the table, that my cards would be mucked, and blinds forfeited. They all agreed. Then he said to a novice at the table "You realize he will finish higher than you if you agree to this, and that's not fair to you", so of course she reversed her position. So the rules change when they don't necessarily favor you??? What a bunch of BS. I've seen players at the WSOP show up late, oversleep, etc. and their cards are mucked and blinds forfietted. It's my understanding that THAT IS THE RULE. Didn't matter to the host though. What an idiot. Anyway, I had to leave, so I walked giving my chips back to the house and finishing 8th. Shouldn't I be upset about this? Does anyone agree with this 'ruling' or should my chips have been able to stand for themselves until they are exhausted by the blinds?

Bad call by the host. If you had the short stack, they probably would have let you play it out that way. Since you were the chip leader, it didn't work that way.
Bad call!!! :x

I also think it's a bad call. It seems no different than if you were in the bathroom for an extended period of time. What was the guy's name who was running the tourny?
You real should put this in their forum as they have one here. The way I read the rules they play by, this was wrong ie
10. An absent player is always dealt a hand, and will be put up for blinds, antes, and the forced bet if low.

I just went and checked it out too.
10. An absent player is always dealt a hand, and will be put up for blinds, antes, and the forced bet if low.
12. If you are not present when it becomes your turn to act, your hand is dead. This includes situations in which a live blind is not present to act, since an absent player cannot exercise the option to raise.
I am going to have a word with Scott, the tournament manager. That host was out of line. (I won't mention his name, but if you were at Hiccups1 last night, you know who he is) He was saying I don't know what I'm talking about, calling me an Ahole in front of the other players, and telling me that the decision of the host is final and to 'shut the F up'. That's just not cool.

That's just wrong. I play for fun (and money). If I was there and heard that going on, I would have complained to the manager and probbly not have returned to play in any of their events. As it is, I will not paly in any events until I hear that this was settled. The bad call was one thing, but the name calling is another... Even if provoked, they have a responsibility as a host to difuse a situation, not perpetuate it.

I plan to get this addressed ASAP. Every other host CSL has that hosted where I have been playing has been spectacular! I am even on a first name basis with some of them, and I plan to continue playing in their tournaments. However, this particular incident with this host must be brought to their attention, and it will be. I'm glad I'm not the only one that thinks I should be mad about this. :!:  :!:

The host made several bad decisions:
1. He went against the written rules for the tournement.
2. He turned it into a democracy... You never ask a table to vote on a decision. Everyone is playing aggainst you. They are going to vote against you.
3. He lost his cool and used profanity in front of other palyers.
I am sure the company is great. I am also sure they don't want this #%@% representing the company in this way.
Well with poker as popular as it is now and growing daily, there will always be those that just hop in to try and make a quick buck off of it.
The best thing players can do is to let others know of their experiences of the games and how they are treated and then vote with their feet.
Those that know what they are doing and take care of the players will do well, no doubt, those that don't wont.
It ain't like it's hard to find a game in this town. 8)

Well put!
Blah Blah Blah...
Rick is right... 8)
Unfortunately, it's not too easy to find a game in Colorado Springs. We are usually a little behind down here anyway.
Godd luck to all!!!
Can't wait for my cards

That is a very bad call by the host. One guy in the tourney I played in last night just up and left without notice. He just never showed after the break. We as a table decided to play his blinds until they were gone which is what I believe is the tourney rule. What a jerk that host was!!!

Bad call by the host. Point is, the rules state he was wrong. Even without rules, still poor decision by the host. But I will say, all the hosts I have seen have been great. Just an exception to the rule.

Yes, a horrible call!! What's the deal with that host? It almost seems as though he had personal stakes in someone else that made the final table....I don't know.
We all should boycott any event with that host. The name of the guy would be good to know. Either way, something needs to happen, something needs to be addressed because this type of blatant rule violation is not appropriate.
Nate
P.S. I also would like to wear a Denver Poker shirt to events that I go to, even home games. =)

Very bad decision. Mucking your hands and posting the blinds would have been the fair way to handle the matter.

I would print these responses and show the host.
Was the host playing also? Because from what you said he changed someone's mind even after they voted for the right way. What was his chip count like?
some people play for fun and win money...and Some people play for the money and have no fun...

We apologize for the delay in replying. We had to track down the player, and host info for that particular game.
After speaking to the host I discovered that he consulted the rulebook right after this player had left. His chips were put back on the table, and he was blinded out per the rules. The player ended up placing 2nd that evening. Therefore no "violation of the rules" occurred.
We apologize for the confusion, and urge our players to Email or call us with any comments.

What about the way the host treated the player? He was very rude and he said some very inappropriate things.

I wouldn't have been surprised if he got decked for saying what he did. I think a $1000 consolation for corruption.

I just wanted to let ya'll know that I got an apology from the host and the proper points were awarded. Everything is cool. CSL are a class act. Thanks.
Glad to hear it all worked out for you.

Yes, it's great that things work out in the end. But the "journey" is at least as important. The host needs to know the rules, the host needs to be respectful, the host needs to consult a rule book if unsure.
There is nothing wrong with saying that he needed to consult a rulebook due to being unsure. Common sense would say that a table doesn't vote!!
But, congrats on 2nd place! That's all you could have hoped for...very surprised MORE people didn't slow play waiting for your chips to die out...
